An Entrepreneurs Guide to Overcome Fear

Every day there is someone new who contemplates being self-employed.  They toy with the idea that one day they will pursue entrepreneurship and wistfully wish that they could be the next successful entrepreneur.  Then fear interrupts their dreams and lands their thoughts back to their reality.  Back to that job that they whole heartedly wish to escape.  Fear is the limiting factor.

The average person needs surety.  They need to be assured that everything is going to turn out well before they try something new.  This is especially true when that something includes risk.  The fear that they feel serves to hinder development.  It keeps them from learning and reaching new plateaus.

It is reasonable that someone would fear taking the leap from a full time paying job to the uncertainty of self-employment.  It is also reasonable for the currently self-employed to fear what the next twists and turns in business will be.  There are many things to fear.  There is fear of failure, fear of success, fear of poor health, fear of being sued, etc.

Don't be dismayed, there is good news for those aspiring to be entrepreneurs as well as those who are already self-employed.  You don’t have to let the enemy fear rule your life and make decisions for you.  You can take control of your life, overcome fear and live your entrepreneurial dreams.  Consult the following paragraphs for the steps to conquer fear.

How to Evaluate Fear

Start by beginning to acknowledge your fears.  In the business world we are rewarded for our fearlessness.  Therefore, it is easy to pretend that our fears don’t exist.  However, denying our fears just further embeds them into our souls.  It does not manage them or eliminate them.  Take the first step of gaining control by claiming ownership of your fear.  Let your fear rise to the forefront of your consciousness and name it.  Officially admit that you have a problem that you need to overcome by writing your fears down.  Write down where you believe your fear begins.  Note what actually brought about your fear.  Write down how your fear has disturbed you in the past and how it disturbs you today.

Think about your fear and determine if what you fear is actually perilous.  Fear can be a healthy emotion put in place to alert you about something that can cause harm.  If what you fear is dangerous then you are right to avoid it.  If it is not, then begin to think about changing how you respond to your fear.  If your fear is failure in business, start gathering information about the business you fear you will fail in and begin taking the preliminary steps towards starting that business.  If you are already self-employed and you fear success then start doing activities that will surely bring you success.  If you already own a business and you fear that it might fail begin to think on each part of your business and begin devoting extra time to its weakest components.

It’s Time to Take Control

If there is something that you want to do but you fear it because you don’t have any experience with it then it’s time to take control of the situation.  Begin by researching what it is that you want to do.  Once you are satisfied that you have gathered enough information then take the knowledge you have gained and use it to gradually expose yourself to the thing that you want to do.

Some circumstances that you fear cannot be handled gradually and require a more direct approach.  For example there might be a certain person that you need to talk to but you fear how they will respond to you or there might be a situation that you fear.  In the case of the scary person you would have a difficult time gradually subjecting yourself to them.  It would be better if you walk right up to the person, introduce yourself, if they don’t already know you, and begin the conversation.  There’s a good chance that you have exaggerated their scariest traits and there was nothing to be afraid of.  The same thing is true about that particular situation that you have been avoiding.  Confront the situation head- on.  You may very well see that your fears are misplaced.  In both scenarios don’t spend too much time thinking about it because that will make it easy to talk yourself out of it.

See Fear in a Different Light

Change how you think about fear.  Make fear an object of strong interest.  Consider the following.  The things that we fear are also the things that we enjoy watching on movies.
Fear can also be seen as an opportunity.  It’s a signal that something needs attention.  Realize that fear could be a sign that you need to spend a little more time familiarizing yourself with something or preparing for something.  For example, when there’s a fear of deadlines let the fear prompt you to spend a little more time in preparation.

 Accept Fear as Common Place

Know that fear is going to exist in your life so go easy on yourself even if you have many fears.  Fear is a human emotion just like happiness or anger.  Know that fear does play a role in our development.  Because of fear we are able to cultivate the feeling of courage.

Celebrate each break through.  Don’t wait until your fears are completely abolished before rewarding yourself.  Each time you try a new idea, take one more step towards starting a business, move towards expanding your current business or confront a scary person give yourself a pat on the back.
